BELIZE CITY, Wed. Jan. 23, 2019– On April 10, Belizeans will vote in a national referendum on whether or not to submit the Guatemalan claim to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a final, binding resolution, in accordance with the terms of the Special Agreement (compromis) treaty signed between Belize and Guatemala in December 2008. The question that voters will be asked to vote yes or no on, is: “Do you agree that any legal claim of Guatemala against Belize relating to land and insular territories and to any maritime areas pertaining to these territories should be submitted to the International Court of Justice for final settlement and that it determines finally the boundaries of the respective territories and areas of the parties?” While the Government of Prime Minister Dean Barrow has launched an “ICJ Education Campaign” that is geared toward obtaining a yes vote, in contrast, organizations such as the Belize Peace Movement (BPM) and the Belize Progressive Party (BPP), among other groups, are proponents of a no-to-the-ICJ vote. Against this backdrop, the Kremandala organization has put forth its own, unique position, dubbed “People’s Forum,” which takes the format of dialogue among grassroots Belizeans. Kremendala’s People’s Forum is not [...]

American John Delong attacked the front-runner duo of his teammate Clayton Travis and Nissan Arana at the Burrell Boom junction and came in solo to claim the 2019 Krem New Year’s Day Classic. There won’t be a great grinding and gnashing of teeth by Belizean fans since Delong has been a fixture in races here, I think for over a decade, and the chances are most of us consider him an “honorary Belizean” anyway. His Skyline teammate Clayton Travis out dueled Nissan Arana at the finish and in the media interview afterward declared he will be back. It will be interesting, to say the least, if he is back to team up with Delong in the Run for the Roses. Although only 22, a cursory glance at Clayton Travis’ biography on the internet shows that he is an experienced racer with more than 50 relatively high-level races the past 3-4 years under his belt, and he has won or placed in the top ten in several. John DeLong who finished second in 2018, said in his post-race interview that he prepared for this race and it showed. I think because the race follows the Christmas and New Year festivities it [...]

At exactly 9 a.m. on January 1, 2019, 82 riders, me included, took off from the border in front of the Belize Customs on our rigorous journey to Santos Diaz on Central American Boulevard for a total of 91 miles. This was the 29th running of the Krem New Year’s Cycling Classic, which has become one of the biggest Cycling Races in Belize, 2nd only to the Holy Saturday Cross Country Classic. My goal was simply to finish. For some reason, from the border to Corozal Town, the Heads of State seemed content to sit in and relax, and so we got to Corozal with the Peloton pretty much intact, save for a few riders who were dropped. However, from Corozal to Orange Walk was much more intense as we were hit by the strong crosswinds. This caused much more casualties and a few crashes along the way as we ran out of road with nowhere left to hide from the strong breeze. The first of the nine $1,000 Station Prizes, at San Roman Village (mile 72), was won by American John DeLong and donated by Freetown Drug Store. Shortly after that a break was formed that included Americans John [...]

It’s been a few years since I’ve paid much if any attention to sports generally and cycling in particular. I’d see some of the news reports in passing but it has been some time since I anticipated the results of races and tried to keep track of who’s who. You may not be a fan but if you are a Belizean, particularly a Belizean man, chances are cycling is a part of your psyche even if you were not a participant. The Holy Saturday Ride for the Roses has been a rite of passage for many of my contemporaries. For older farts like me, in the days before television and social media, the disembodied broadcast of the heroics of Halliday and Parks are indelibly seared in our beings. I emerged this week from other contemplations to the realization that the Krem New Year’s Day Cycling Classic is almost 30 years old, and very much a tradition. I saw the second race at the end of 1991, in fact, was a part of the broadcast team, an assignment I did for several years. Like I said, I haven’t been keeping up, but I am intrigued by the way this year’s edition [...]

Roy Jeremy Belisle, “RB” to his numerous nephews and nieces, celebrated his 100th birthday today, December 18, 2017. His children, and his numerous relatives, will agree that he has lived a full life. The man has aged like fine wine. If you ask him his secret, he’ll tell you that he says his prayers every night. He’ll also tell you that he has a loving heart. RB is a man who loves taking a little whiskey with his friends. He loves the females, but he tells his nephews that he is accused of many crimes he did not commit. RB’s great love is the sea. He was a great sailor, and fisherman. Like all the really good ones, he can tell a story, with flavor. RB, the uncle of the Amandala Publisher, now resides in Cotton Tree, at the home of his caretaker, Ms. Gloria Soriano. Throughout this week he’ll have no shortage of company, as a number of his children and grandchildren, from Belize and abroad, and many of his nieces and nephews will be dropping by, to fete. Happy Birthday, RB, from the Belisles, the Castillos and the Hydes. Keep saying your prayers at bedtime and don’t lose [...]
