U-17 Softball team returns home with Silver from Panama
belize softballThe Belize Rural High School from Double Head Cabbage has much to be proud of. The Belize Under 17 female softball team, which went to Panama to compete in the 3rd Central American and Caribbean Scholar Games, was made up of students from their school, with the addition of 5 students from other schools. And the girls distinguished themselves by bringing home silver medals from the competition. Representatives from the Belize Rural High School were there to greet the girls at the Philip Goldson International Airport when they arrived back in the country yesterday.

The competition, which included teams from Colombia, El Salvador, Venezuela, Guatemala and host Panama, was held over the past week and the Belize U-17 team performed against Venezuela, Guatemala and Panama.

After beginning the tournament with an 11-0 win over Panama on Monday, November 14, and a 4-1 loss to Guatemala on Tuesday, November 15, Belize rebounded to defeat Panama with a score of 11-7 on Thursday, to qualify for the playoffs. They then defeated Guatemala with a score of 12-3 on Saturday, to advance to the final round of play. Eventual champions Venezuela, who won all their games, had to fight to win that last match against Belize. In the end, they defeated our girls with a score of 7- 4.

The team's head coach, Nelbert Flowers, told Amandala that he is especially proud of the girls because this was their first trip out to compete for Belize.

Ashley Lucas and Sabrina Campos were presented with additional medals for exceptional performances in the 4 games.
