Mirage Lady Rebels are 2012 Belize City Softball Champions

The 2012 Belize City Senior Female Softball Competition concluded with game 4 of the best-of-5 championship series on Friday, September 14, at Rogers Stadium, where Mirage Lady Rebels won, 5-3, over defending champions Belize Telemedia, to clinch the series 3-1 and claim the 2012 Belize City championship. (Rebels had taken games 1 and 2 by 17-10 and 6-5 scores, respectively; Telemedia bounced back to win game 3 by a 14-5 margin, to make it a 2-1 series. A victory for Telemedia in game 4 would have tied the series at 2-2.)

Mirage Lady Rebels, batting in the bottom of the 1st inning, scored 3 runs on 4 hits, the key blow being right fielder Clarencia Jones’ run producing double.

Undeterred, defending champions Telemedia chipped away at the 3-0 deficit, scoring a single run in the top of the 4th inning, and then 2 more runs in the 5th inning, to tie the score at 3-3.

But, leading off in the bottom of the 5th, in what may have been a psychological boost to the Rebels’ resolve, their 3rd baseman Lisa Jones launched a head high rocket past the ear of Telemedia 3rd baseman Norecia Frazer for a stand-up double, with nobody out. But Telemedia’s Mary Flowers maintained her composure on the mound, and after a series of mis-steps by Rebels hitters and some fine Telemedia fielding, the Rebels were all out with the score still at 3-3.

he Rebels’ disappointment should have resulted in a shift of fortune, but for her part, Rebels’ ace Lanisha Jones rose to the occasion and kept the Telemedia hitters on their heels in the top of the 6th, backed up by some welcome catches from previously “butter fingered” outfielders.

It was still 3-3 when the Lady Rebels, batting in the bottom of the 6th inning, came up with 2 more big runs, which turned out to be the margin of victory, 5-3, in one heck of a contest that, regretfully, very few fans had turned out to witness.

Mirage Lady Rebels scored their 5 runs on 7 hits, and they committed 3 errors; while Telemedia’s 3 runs came from 6 hits, and they had 2 errors. The winning pitcher was Lanisha Jones, and the loss was charged to Mary Flowers.

(Ed. Note: Telemedia is still the reigning National Softball Champion, and thus gets to represent Belize in international competition. The Telemedia-Rebels rivalry will resume in the 2012 Annual Charles Solis Memorial Tournament, scheduled for September 30 at Rogers Stadium.)

About KREM
The idea for the KREM Radio station originated in early 1979 while Rufus X and I were visiting New Orleans. There was a New Orleans deejay I liked, by the name of Sister Love, and one day Rufus and his cousin, Sam Wiley, who was our host, showed me the building where the radio station which featured Sister Love was located. It was quite a modest, one flat structure, much smaller than the three story Albert Cattouse Building from where the Belize government monopoly station – Radio Belize – was broadcasting.
